Tuckpointing and Repointing Brickwork in Perth

Restore your building to its former glory.

Over time, brickwork can begin to look weathered and outdated, especially in regions where weather conditions are more extreme, like Perth, WA, causing homes and buildings to look less appealing on the outside, and especially internal features like chimneys and fireplaces, which also endure harsh conditions.

The technique used in these instances is called Tuckpointing, and is a brickwork restoration technique which dates back to the 18th Century in England, and was used to make poor workmanship and materials look more appealing.

What is Tuckpointing?

Tuckpointing has evolved over time, and is a brick and mortar repair method which gives the artificial impression that fine joints have been made by using two contrasting colours in the mortar joints of brickwork. The two contrasting colours of mortar has one colour which matches the bricks, which ultimately gives the illusion of fine joints which have been created within the wall.

The standard approach to tuckpointing involves:

  • Grounding or routing out the old mortar to the desired depth.
  • Filling in with mortar in the newly dug grooves.
  • Cutting thin strips down the middle of the red mortar, to form grooves.
  • Filling in the grooves with a mortar color which matches the original mortar on the outside of the structure.

The tuckpointing technique therefore reinforces structures with a weatherproof barrier by sealing the areas where mortar has worn away over time due to exposure to weather elements, and aesthetically gives a new decorative finish to older masonry and structure itself.
